Every month 10 million unique users visit Vibbo and thousands of gadgets find new homes each year. In 2016 all these users potentially saved 0.7 million tons of carbon dioxide when shopping secondhand. That is the equivalent of all traffic in Madrid for 4 months. The environment is a growing driving force for buying and selling secondhand and this report can now show the actual climate benefit that comes out of it – the Second Hand Effect actually reduces our carbon footprint.

There are many reasons why people sell and buy stuff on sites for secondhand shopping. One obvious reason is to make a good deal. Many also think it is a practical way to get rid of furniture and other things. There is also a growing trend to shop vintage items and clothes to make a statement of who you are.

Not least there is the environmental argument. More and more people are aware of climate change and the environment is getting stronger as an incentive to use the site. No matter what the reason might be, the trade on Vibbo is an important contribution to a very important issue – to save the planet for future generations.

To calculate Vibbo’s climate savings we have collaborated with IVL the Swedish Environmental Research Institute. Vibbo’s sister company Blocket in Sweden, initiate the study in 2013, and it has now been conducted on eight of our Schibsted’s, major marketplaces in Europe, including Vibbo, and on Avito in Morocco.

The IVL have used the site’s sales figures, as well as taking note of customer surveys and information about energy consumption in the operation of its office and its server rooms. The method of calculation is based on the assumption that each sold used product replaces the production of a new, equivalent product and the waste management of the product. By analyzing products sold on the sites, IVL have extracted climate data that then has been recalculated into their equivalents in kilograms of Carbon Dioxide.

The category named ”Vehicle” is by far the one that in 2016 saved most CO2e on Vibbo with 0.5 million tons. This is due to the fact that cars and other vehicles are complex products and producing them demands a lot of energy. There are same specific facts to consider when calculation the effect from re-sold cars, all of them described in the clarifications.

We speak of Carbon Dioxide since it’s is the most important of greenhouse gases. It’s a result of combusting of all kinds of material and from humans and animals breathing. As we use more and more resources the CO2e levels are constantly growing and increasing the greenhouse effect – causing global warming.

Globing warming is changing nature and affecting human lives. We see more environmental disasters, less drinkable water and smaller harvests. To diminish the effect of global warming we need to decrease our CO2e emissions.

Even the smallest thing matters. One way is to shop secondhand.
